Before televisions were invented, families had to find other ways to entertain themselves. Parents would go out almost each evening to dinner clubs, movies, theaters, or visiting friends. Children stayed home to listen to programs on the radio and do their homework.
Finding entertainment before TV was actually pretty easy, and many people nowadays would thoroughly enjoy a trip back in time to do what our parents or grandparents did on a regular basis. Check out an old black and white movie with Fred Astaire or Cary Grant and see the night clubs, and the dinners, the elegant clothes, and the top entertainers of the day. People were quite happy with this kid of entertainment.
What happened to all this fun when televisions took over our lives? Most of it disappeared. New York watched in sadness at the closing of the last of the great supper clubs, El Morocco, in the 60s. Even the motion picture industry suffered greatly because people decided to stay home and watch the new TV shows rather than head to the movies.
Parents and couples didn't need to head to supper clubs and movies all the time for something to do. They happily stayed at home in front of their new TV, eating their dinner, watching all sorts of shows.
Schedules and social calendars were built around these new TV shows. Bowling banquets, birthday parties and even anniversary dinners were arranged so as not to interfere with important shows like Ed Sullivan, Kraft Theater, or Monday Night at the Movies.
We have evolved from small round screens in large awkward wooden cabinets, to wafer thin flat screens that are almost as large as movie screens. Connect them to woofers and tweeters and speakers and you have your own surround sound digitally enhanced home theater system boasting an HD 60" plasma panel TV.
The original small round black and white screens with huge rabbit ear antennas have warped into flat panel screens about as thin a pad of paper. These can go up to 60" wide and larger, and can be used for other things besides watching TV. Hook them up to your computer and you can see slideshows of pictures, watch video downloads, and even check your email.
TV has once again become the family hub. With thousands of digital channels to choose from, everyone can find something to their liking - even the family pet who can be trained to click the remote to turn on their favorite show to see fishies or kitties running about.
